Artist Statement

My current body of work depicts the relationship between objects present in my childhood and the people I associate with them. Through my journey to learn more about my family’s history and contributions to Dark Corner, SC, I have uncovered the significance of preserving what is left of our history through my artwork. This act of preserving these memories has led me to work off of old family photos, specifically polaroids, as they are not archival quality and will one day cease to exist. These photos combined with the stories that have been told to me my whole life have led to my fascination with the peaches and moonshine my grandpa used to sell. I also feel as if peaches and moonshine are synonymous with southern states and depicting these objects might allow the viewer of my art to have a more personal tie to the art itself. Through this tie to southern culture, I hope to share my family’s story and contributions to the history of Dark Corner, SC.
