Artist Statement

This painting was inspired by the significance hair is to Black culture. Our hair is often referred to as our crown. I added the monarch butterflies to expand the notion of “crown”. Butterflies are delicate and can symbolize peace. I wanted to display elegance and peace within a Black woman. Particularly because we are oftentimes told to be strong, but we can also balance being soft.
