Even communicating with your closest, most loved family members who live in the same household can be challenging. I am the mother of a child with autism. Especially in his younger days, I often wondered, “Am I doing this right?” when speaking with him. He feels like a part of me, yet I felt like I needed lessons on how to communicate. This quilt is a portrait of us when he was about 6, at the peak of our speech therapy challenges together. When I saw the theme of this exhibit, “Proximity,” this was the piece in my inventory that came to mind.
