HOME v.2:
Homeland

The Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Land Trust are partnering with the Georgia Center for the Book and the Decatur Library to present a powerful art show, “Homeland.”  This second installment of the annual “HOME” exhibition seeks to inspire conversation and consideration for the challenges we face as a community to ensure access to dignified housing options.

About the Exhibition

Exhibition Run: May 29th – July 18th, 2026

Location: Fourth Floor Gallery of the Decatur Library

Gallery Hours: Thursday to Saturday, 1-5pm (closed July 3rd & 4th)

Opening Reception: Friday, May 29th 6:30-9pm

The Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Land Trust are partnering with the Decatur Library to present the second edition of powerful art show celebrating the multifaceted meaning of “Home.”  We invite artists of all mediums to lend their creative voices to this important cause.

A person’s or a people’s native land, we look to explore “homeland” as a geographical point of origin and a state of being. Works should express cultural and ethnic elements, and elucidate the view of “home” from the immigrant to the expatriate, the displaced to the indigenous. How do we find “home” when we are away from the land of our forebears? What do newly arrived peoples do to preserve their culture and heritage? How do we honor and acknowledge the indigenous inhabitants of the lands upon which we all now live?

We encourage artists to explore these themes and more in your artwork.  Let your creativity illuminate the diverse ways we experience and define “home,” and your connection with a “HOMELAND.”

Aileen de la Torre was born in Atlanta to Cuban immigrants many moons ago. After stalking the halls of Cross Keys High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from University of Colorado, with which she did absolutely nothing in French, followed by a Master of Historic Preservation from University of Georgia. She has since lived all over the U.S. preaching about how “good city planning can solve the world’s problems.” She is involved with the Peachtree Creek Greenway, Immigrant Defense Project, We Love Buford Highway, and The Chamblee History Project. She has a husband who’s a professor at Arizona State University and two awesome children. She serves as planner for the City of Decatur and staff to the Historic Preservation Commission.

John Morris is an artist-educator living outside Atlanta with his wife and frequent collaborator Christina Ayala. He holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BFA from the University of Georgia. Morris often explores the idiosyncrasies of contemporary pop culture, with much of his recent work depicting landscapes through which humans escape while engaging in fantasy, early memories, and visions of ideal states of being. Morris has served as a juror, reviewer, and curator for numerous regional and national exhibitions. Over the past decade, he has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, and his artwork has been shown abroad in venues such as the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in South Korea, the Millepiani Gallery in Rome, and he has had his work cataloged by the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France. Morris serves as Associate Professor of Art at the University of West Georgia in photography.
