Fine Arts Exhibition 2024

Forced Perspective

May 2 to June 14

Gallery Hours: Thursday-Saturday, 1-5 pm
Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore St, Decatur, GA

Inside the Fourth Floor Gallery

Closing Reception: Friday, June 14 from 6:30-9:00 pm

The 35th annual Fine Arts Exhibition explores “Forced Perspective” as the 2024 theme. When experiences challenge our worldview, when encounters lead to a reexamination of long-held beliefs, when we realize jarring truths or witness inescapable realities… artists and audiences are invited to consider how enduring discomfort affects how we relate to ourselves, each other, and the world.

Interior

Interior

by Leylis Burnette
Oil on Canvas
24" x 20" x 2"
2022

Artist Statement

This piece represents the emotional immaterial human Interior that no one reaches to see from the outside. It contemplates the effects of discomfort on their self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and/or personal cosmovision when individuals are confronted with dissonant experiences. People are presented with an opportunity to reassess their long-held beliefs or disassociation that she or he is going through. This process of introspection can be a profound and transformative experience… Answers are in yourself with the potential to impact both the individual and the broader society by loving who you are.

Tattoo Floral Vase

Tattoo Floral Vase

by Rachel Burns
Ceramic
6" x 4" x 4"
2024

Artist Statement

This piece is inspired by American traditional tattooing. I love the composition of American traditional tattoos, so I took my personal style of black linework and tried to combine the two. I chose this particular vase to apply this design to because I threw it with a lot of curves. This design and piece together behave like a tattooed body, which I find really fascinating.

Artist Statement

This piece has a scene of a frog making pasta from scratch with a pot of water boiling on the stove. The frogs are a common motif in my work. They are inspired by Beatrix Potter, Studio Ghibli movies, and Mr. Frog and Mr. Toad. I love imaging the frogs in different settings, each with their own apartments and personalities.

Hissing Infant

Hissing Infant

by Emma Callicutt
Soft pastels on paper
22" x 30"
2024

Artist Statement

This work grapples with loss as an entity that can be viewed from ever-shifting perspectives. A personal loss can be shocking – alien and incomprehensible. It can draw us back into infancy and can introduce us to unfamiliar, reborn versions of ourselves. Those lost to us may seem to hang suspended in the past, present, and future. They come to exist at the intersection between the threads of those who remember them. This work seeks to explore the mystery of what we feel and how we perceive and communicate our experiences to others.

TOGETHER

TOGETHER

by Armando Chacon
Oil on canvas
24" x 24" x 2"
2023

Artist Statement

In my art, I explore the depths of human experience, weaving emotions into visual representations that resonate with the inner sphere. Each stroke and color reflects a passage in the universal experience, inviting viewers to contemplate their own spiritual voyage. As I navigate the canvas, my art serves as a visual testament to the shared human odyssey, a reflection of the profound and intricate narratives that unfold within everyone. Through this creative exploration, I aspire to foster a deeper connection with the universal threads that bind us and illuminate the beauty inherent in our collective spiritual sojourn.
In my artistic pursuit, the soul quest becomes a central theme, transcending physical landscapes into metaphysical realms. Through symbolism and expression, I delve into the complexities of self-discovery, transformation, and interconnectedness of souls. My creation aims to evoke introspection, guiding viewers on a contemplative exploration of their own unique paths.

Disconnected and Wounded yet Still United

Disconnected and Wounded yet Still United

by Cecelia Dunn
Mixed media, collage. Burlap with cardboard and stitching
30" x 48" x 1.5"
2023

Artist Statement

This representation of our Stars and Stripes, titled “Disconnected and Wounded, Yet Still United” evokes the violence of the many mass shootings we have experienced as a nation. I wanted to convey the disconnect we have between our national horror over the deaths of children and adults who were taken so suddenly. The inability of our leaders to act to protect us has kept us in a state of disconnect. The puzzle pieces are all disconnected, yet organized to resemble a flag. The black bullet holes jar our sense’s and the stitching represents our efforts to remain united. I want the viewer to see the glimmer of hope in the colorful pieces as an effort to bring us all together again.

24" x 48" x 2"
2017

Artist Statement

Using subjects that could easily be overlooked and considered dismissible I endeavor to bring light to the idea that beauty can be found anywhere, in anyone. I often experiment with splicing together variations of images and altering colors to demonstrate how easily our perception of things can shift and change. In an instant a situation can go from hopeless to full of promise. Too often we focus on the moment we are in and can’t see the hope that lies beyond circumstances or the beauty that lies beneath the surface.

Release

by Sam Harris
Glazeware
9.5" x 13" x 6.5"
2024

Artist Statement

Release is a portrait of a subject’s struggle between a negative internal monologue displayed through a variety of mouths exhibiting obstructive expressions and the subject’s ability to release themselves from that discomfort. The glazed bursts of color acts as a positive shell made to resemble a kaleidoscope. Kaleidoscope to me, means a new beginning with every turn. The subject is visibly tortured by their inner voices seen by the somber facial expression but silences those voices by pulling the rope away from their neck allowing for a new beginning.

Perceptions

Perceptions

by Kelly Irby
Acrylic petals on canvas
48" x 48" x 3"
2023

Artist Statement

When you look at this canvas and it’s many petals do you interpret it as a tunnel or a tower? Does the white section pop out or does it seem to fall away? Can you alter how you see this in your mind?

Likewise, how do you interpret authority? Do you see it as oppressive or freeing? Do you see it as cooperative or contentious? Can you alter this too in your mind?

At times I rage against the idea of submitting because I want the control. I want to control the world I live in and the world to which I am exposed. But if I shift my perspective, I can see submission for what it truly is – giving honor and considering others above my own selfish way of life.

Submitting to one another and to authority can foster collaboration and harmony within our relationships and communities. It demands empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. It allows one to acknowledge and appreciate the diverse perspectives of others. Practicing shifting our perceptions is truly a practice of humility and love.

Contain the Meltdown

Contain the Meltdown

by Carson Keller
Textile
48" x 34" x 1"
2024

Artist Statement

This quilted piece is inspired by my experience as the mother of a child with autism. When public spaces were too overwhelming for my son, and he would have a “meltdown,” people always looked to me to contain and put an end to the disruption. I saw it as his reaction to the chaotic environment they had created. They saw it as a temper tantrum due to bad parenting. I chose fabric as the medium for this piece because of its comforting qualities. Coming home, draping it on my lap and sewing it piece by piece calmed my mind after such encounters. Like the dripping ice cream into the hand on my quilt, you cannot contain a meltdown. You just have to ride it out and let it run its course. Trying to contain it is just a performance to the surrounding observers.

In 2017, Stephanie Jones-Rogers’ article titled, ‘[S]he could…spare one ample breast for the profit of her owner…’ examined how white mothers developed a ‘Wet Nurse’ economy by renting, loaning, and selling enslaved African women as wet nurses. The niche economy was mostly carried out within US Southern and Latin America households which kept this economy hidden in the broader sense of “traditional” enslaved skills and labor. Also, the article discussed how white
mothers’ desires and demands were crucial to the commodification of enslaved African women’s reproductive bodies, their breast milk, and maternal care they provided to white children.

They the People

They the People

by Ryan Lewis
Single channel video
1080p or 4K resolution, duration 2:59
2022

Artist Statement

Symbols come with intended messages, but their most enduring associations accumulate over time. Symbols are not content, but are instead vessels in which content is stored. As designer Paul Rand said: “It is only by association…that a logo [symbol] takes on any real meaning. It derives its meaning and usefulness from the quality of that which it symbolizes.”

They the People invites reconsideration of a familiar national symbol. Animated fibers form a fragile, loosely-connected fabric that precariously hovers between order and chaos. This delicate vision is disrupted by fields of digital texture. We are reminded that symbols are what we make them—they can represent our ideals and successes, but also our collective failures, insensitivities, overconfidence, and divisions.

Acrylic and mixed media
36" x 44" x 2"
2023

Artist Statement

My paintings explore the interconnection of humanity with nature and my search to understand this relationship. I work in an expressionistic and intuitive manner allowing the painting to evolve through the process of discovery while making considered decisions along the way. Colors layered with bold, heavy brush strokes and gestural marks are used to create a richly textured surface from which images emerge. The personal symbolism of the flat deer and birds along with the house becoming a mountain create a narrative which welcomes the viewer’s curiosity. Using layers of earthy, desaturated colors along with glazing and a few areas of brighter colors against the stark black and white areas creates contrast. A journey of discovery, guided by the interplay of line, color, shape, layers, contrast; which reveal history, and texture. I enjoy the brushstrokes of paint, the variety of marks from pencil and the fun of posca markers and crayon.

Furiana

Furiana

by Diana Newton
Assembled sculpture
6’ x 40" x 40"
2023

Artist Statement

Furiana reimagines the impact on women when we lack control of our own bodies. As a subverted depiction of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, she reminds us that one of the most powerful women in history could only retain her power if she chose not to have children.

Channelling the retributive energy of a Greek Fury, today her rage is directed towards conservatives who insist on birth regardless of circumstances, politicians continuing to drive repressive legislation and Supreme Court Justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Without freedom of choice, Furiana’s innate vitality has darkened and desiccated, turning even the lace and gems of her once regal Tudor garb into brittle decorations that reveal desperate options.

Yet she stands at the moment of transformation, igniting her spirit to defy further repression and regain control of her reproductive rights.

Artist Statement

Invitational Artwork
When our world feels overwhelming — full of sadness, disrespect, war, tragedy, hate and unfairness — I turn to my source for comfort and strength. I go outside to bathe myself in the natural world. To breathe deeply. To take in the sun and the earth. To reground myself. To find healing in the flora and fauna that surrounds us. It is then that I’m reminded that love, compassion, calm, peace and hope still exist, even alongside the difficult.
In this piece I seek to offer a fresh perspective, another way to look at our world, by pointing out the mystery found in our natural world. I seek to capture the meditative experiences that we can all feel when we slow down and simply experience the pureness, love and strength of nature. I hope that my work transmits this healing power by sending out gentle, positive ripples of love, light, compassion and hope.

We live in a culture obsessed with drinking. We drink at weddings and sporting events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Drinking has become so normalized that no one ever questions the fact that alcohol is everywhere. In fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink.

Someone I love is in recovery from alcohol use disorder. As they strive for sobriety, it has undoubtedly changed how I think, speak, and act on the topic of alcohol. Going out for a drink used to be the default activity. Now, we participate in activities that help us connect in ways that a conversation over a few glasses of wine never could.

This body of work is an invitation to examine your personal attitudes and actions around drinking and how it may affect those in recovery. I hope it serves as encouragement to be sensitive and supportive to those who have a different relationship with alcohol than that of your own.

Oil on canvas

2024

Artist Statement

I am a multimedia artist that uses oil, graphite and charcoal to enforce my analytical analysis on intimate relationships regarding power in different perspectives. The use of these materials allows me to explore technicality and emphasis on details. Figuration in the work gives myself the power to hyper-fixate on anatomical movement. Through forced and natural posing, I emphasize my relationship with abusive heteronormativity psychologically and emotionally relating to the importance of accountability in consanguinity. Recognizing the duality of responsibility, the work highlights myself as a victim and perpetrator to mental health.

My paintings are imaginary, layered landscapes that seek to root my history in place. I use paint and the act of painting to delve into how my sense of identity and sense of belonging are intertwined with particular locations but not singular ones. Referencing places I have lived in but never fully belonged to, I merge a variety of maps from different sources in my paintings and drawings. In addition to these maps, I include layers of mapping symbols and my personal iconography, the wave. I aspire to create a new sense of belonging by combining these elements.

I use my camera to try to capture the essence of ordinary people, places, and things, to see them with fresh eyes and reveal them in a new way. I am drawn to the smaller towns, rural areas, and byways – the “blue lines” on the old maps – and to quirkiness and eccentricity.

In this photo I tried to capture the vibrant movement of a young woman performing traditional Mexican folkloric dances at the Dia de los muertos celebration at Oakland Cemetery in November 2022. Mexican immigrants are becoming ever more integrated into life in Atlanta and leave their mark on the culture and society.

Artist Statement

Personal memories are at the forefront of my hierarchy of subject matter, yet my current prints are representative of my reaction to the ever changing socio-ecological and political landscape we currently navigate. Permeated by the malicious distractions of injustices towards human and animal kind the animals in my prints are my protagonists: hyper aware and without recourse they attempt escape.
Additionally the images include a collage of anomalous colors and patterns, safety pins and milagros, to distinguish a split with what may appear real or imagined or the fervent hope of what might become.

Volcanism on the Moon

Volcanism on the Moon

by Mark Schoon & Casey McGuire
Albumen Print
8" x 8" x 0"
2023

Artist Statement

“The Great Moon Hoax” merges science and art by exploring the complicated relationships between observation, representation, and understanding. This collaboration springs out of McGuire and Schoon’s individual research that address different aspects of the real, the artificial, and unattainable.

These images were realized through the creation of sculptures for the purposes of making photographic prints. At times referencing lunar models, Apollo era images, and telescopic astrophotography, this body of work bridges a gap between historic and modern modes of scientific representation while re-contextualizing and bringing them into a contemporary vernacular. The images of the sculptures are presented using historic photographic processes such as salt prints, albumen prints, cyanotypes as well as more contemporary means. In their presentation, the images encourage the viewer to take a closer look at science, the imagery that represents it, and how it impacts understanding.

Oscarville

Oscarville

by Miles Sollars-White
Acrylic ink on paper
24" x 18" x 0.006"
2024

Artist Statement

This work aims to shed light on the history of Oscarville, a city submerged beneath the waters of Lake Lanier. It began with the expulsion of its original inhabitants, members of the Cherokee Nation, by the U.S. government, becoming one of the most southeastern points of the Trail of Tears. Later, it became inhabited by a prosperous black farming community of freed slaves after the Civil War. The year 1912 marked a turning point when Oscarville, a thriving Black community, fell victim to racial violence and horrific lynchings. Following these lynchings, a white terrorist mob known as “night riders” raided the town, set fire to homes, businesses, and churches. This violence devastated the community, resulting in the exodus or murder of 98% of its Black residents. By the 1950s, the government had purchased much of the stolen land and constructed a dam, flooding Oscarville and giving rise to Lake Lanier.

2023

Artist Statement

Underneath the roots of a tree that is both holy and demonic a ‘Dancer’ rests with a daisy of thought growing from their mind. This work seeks to visually depict the oppression of free thought existing within the framework of religion and a society that places religious bigotry above the well-being of its people. It highlights the struggles faced by individuals trapped within the confines of dogma. Ultimately, this work serves as a visual testament to the enduring power of critical thinking and the importance of fostering an environment that nurtures free thought.

by Randy Taylor
Ink on paper

Artist Statement

This work is part of parade. Parades celebrate, show gratitude, and honor others. What happens at times is the celebrant might reveal what is something that in the long run is harmful for the planet. Sailors once took animals, which are now considered endangered or extinct for easy food sources. This is what happened to the Galapagos Tortoise and the flightless Dodo.

The Georgia Gazette

The Georgia Gazette

by Patricia Turner
Mixed, silk and paper on 9 wood panels
50" x 38" x 2"
2022

Artist Statement

Two million Africans perished on the gruesome sail to the United States after capture in West Africa. The arrival of survivors in Savannah was documented by The Georgia Gazette in advertisements for the sale of these men, women, and children on the auction block. “The Georgia Gazette” documents the horrors of human cargo and enslavement but also relates them to the turbulent times in which we live. After 400 years… through Jim Crow, the lynchings by the KKK, white supremacists, and police brutality, Black Americans continue to be redlined, murdered by gun violence, and doomed to poor education and poverty as a result of our country’s history of white domination. Monetary reparations cannot erase this inhumanity but we, as Americans in all of our glorious colors, can begin a course correction at the ballot box. Let us step up and vote for those who both acknowledge our history and allow our children to learn that history… because we are only scarred by the past if we ignore it.

Artist Statement

This piece depicts my impression in mixed media of faces and expressions, created individually in wire, on a busy city street. I conceptualized this work before the pandemic of 2020, however, it was not completed until 2020. It was inspired by a typical street corner scene in New York City.

Survival

Survival

by Judy Vienneau
Mixed media - acrylic on canvas with wire sculpture in relief
22" x 28" x 3"
2018

Artist Statement

I am making a statement about homelessness, with a stereotypical scene of men (sculpted in wire) under a bridge keeping warm. However, the fantastical colors place the image in an imagined setting as opposed to a bleak reality. Homelessness is a problem that many try to pretend does not exist by imagining a different reality.

Made in Ukraine

Made in Ukraine

by Joshua Williams
Lustre paper
19.89" x 13" x 0"
2022

Artist Statement

I spent the past year photographing people and when I look at my body of work some of those individuals show their struggles. Whether it be a woman forced to leave her country that’s torn by war, or others simply struggling to survive in the streets of Atlanta. It’s a perspective that I can’t identify with but through photography we can show the hardships going on in our communities and even abroad. All these pictures have stories and I hope at least one person through examining my photography can find empathy for someone they can’t relate to.
