In celebration of Black History Month, Decatur Arts Alliance presents an afternoon of storytelling, community, music, and literary engagement.
BreakingGround with author, percussionist, and storyteller, Jerry G. White, is an interactive one-man family show. The performance incorporates theater, music, percussion instruments, and singing, while highlighting a number of relevant books. BreakingGround recounts the incredible lives of Alex Johnson, a member of the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry during the U.S. Civil War; Bass Reeves, a U.S. Federal Marshall; George Washington Carver, a botanist and inventor; Lt. Commander General Benjamin O. Davis, a Tuskegee Airman during WW II; and Satchel Paige, a Negro League Baseball Player. The performance showcases the lives of a variety of inspiring Black and African American men throughout U.S. history and their journey of breaking ground to achieve historical greatness.
