Art Courses
As part of the “Creative Village” in Legacy Park, the Hyatt Cottage is now home to artist work studios and a flex gallery/performance space. Since 2025, it has hosted intergenerational art courses, open to artists of all experience levels aged 15 and up. Limited class sizes permit individual instruction while allowing participants to develop their artistic practice among a diverse group of community members.
Hyatt Cottage
All classes will take place in the first of four buildings activated as part of the “Creative Village” in Legacy Park. The Hyatt Cottage is most easily accessed via the entrance nearest Katie Kerr Road off of S. Columbia Drive. Free parking is available behind the building, and participants will use the rear door to enter the space.

Drawing Fundamentals with Beth Blackwell Cullen
6 week course: September 14 – October 19, 2026
Mondays, 5:00 – 7:00pm

Fundamentals of Quilting with Lauri Jones

Discover the joy of quilting in this fun and welcoming 5-week class! Whether you’re brand new to quilting or looking to build your sewing skills, you’ll learn the essential techniques needed to create beautiful quilts with confidence. Over five weekly sessions, you’ll make your own crib-sized quilt while practicing fabric cutting, pressing techniques, accurate seam allowances, basting, machine quilting, and binding. We will also spend time talking about design strategies for selecting pattern and color.Â
With step-by-step instruction and plenty of hands-on practice, you’ll leave class with a finished quilt, practical skills, and the confidence to tackle future quilting projects. Students must bring a sewing machine in good working order.
Printmaking with Colleen Dunbar
4 week course: October 6 – October 27, 2026

Course Highlights:
Mastering the Linocut Process:
Delve into linocut relief printing, where you’ll carve into linoleum to create bold, textured designs. Gain hands-on experience with carving, inking, and using a press to produce professional-quality prints.Plexiglass Etching (No Acid Technique):
Learn a “no acid” plexiglass etching process, which mimics traditional etching without harmful chemicals. This technique lets you create intricate, detailed designs that translate beautifully to print.Creating a Collograph:
Explore the collograph technique, where you cut shapes or designs from thin cardboard and glue them to a thicker surface to create textured prints with rich, layered effects.Building Your Printmaking Portfolio:
Throughout the course, you will complete a series of projects that form the foundation of your personal printmaking portfolio. Whether for exhibition, sale, or personal growth, you’ll leave with a collection of works you’ll be proud of.
Collage with Tom Zarrilli
4 week course: October 29 – November 19, 2026

Expand your creativity through the expressive and endlessly versatile art of collage. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist looking to expand your practice or portfolio, this hands-on class series will guide you through the creative process of transforming ordinary materials into meaningful works of art.

Collage is the art of selecting, arranging, layering, and combining images and textures to tell a story or evoke emotion. Throughout the series, you’ll explore a variety of techniques while developing your own distinctive artistic style. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual projects, you’ll gain confidence in composition, color, texture, and creative experimentation.

You’ll work with a range of materials, including cut paper, vintage ephemera, old photographs, postage stamps, tissue paper, watercolor, and drawings. Students are encouraged to bring personal papers, photos, or found objects to incorporate into their artwork, creating pieces that are both visually compelling and personally meaningful. A selection of magazines and vintage ephemera will also be provided.

Throughout the series, you’ll learn how to:
- Create dynamic backgrounds and build rich, layered compositions.
- Combine images, textures, and mixed media to add depth and visual interest.
- Use positive and negative space to strengthen composition.
- Reveal underlying layers by cutting and altering images.
- Develop a personal style through experimentation with color, form, and composition.
- Incorporate digital resources and printed imagery into your artwork.
- Create dimensional, multi-layered collage with 3D effects.
- Select the best tools, materials, and adhesives for successful collage.
- Professionally mount, frame, and present finished artwork.

Tom Zarrilli is an Atlanta based artist who has exhibited his work throughout the USA. He is the former gallery director of the 378 Gallery in Atlanta. He creates art in a variety of media including collage, painting, photography, ceramics, and conceptual work.
