Artist Statement

This work was part of a series that illustrated the meanings of cards by pairing them with contemporary issues. The Three of Diamonds means to put your head down, keep working, and not to get distracted by shiny objects. This is illustrated by a deceased seagull on a pile of plastic waste, since they often die by eating the colorful plastic instead of their natural diet. This piece is filled with symbolic elements. The halo, broken disc above its head, the presence of the plastic eye, and the large blue disc its feet are resting upon, are all references to symbols used throughout art history to denote sacred figures, sacrifice, and the presence of God.
