I am a quilt artist and my response to this challenge naturally emerges from my discipline. As I was designing and constructing this piece, I couldn’t help but reflect on the idea of a quilt as a metaphor for our community. Decatur is a diverse and vibrant city. Like a quilt, each piece (person) is unique and essential. We are stitched together by our individual and shared stories. Like a quilt, our assembled community is greater than the sum of its parts. This piece is a contemporary interpretation of the City of Decatur logo. The traditional craft of quilting combined with the modern design represents the history and future of our beautiful city.
