Artist Statement

In addition to drawings made into scrolled constructions, I repurposed old oil paintings on paper. I found the act of reimagining this piece into a sculptural work deeply satisfying. I tore up and then rearranged the sections of painting into something new, considering the colors, and sizes of the pieces. I used black threads as accents, their dangling ends to give a bit of movement to the piece, as I avoided wrapping the scrolls around their centers to emphasize the painted surfaces. The entire process gave me a new way to consider my work, and evoked thoughts of transformation and re-emergence, optimistic notions during the dark days of the pandemic.
