Emerging DHS artist show tonight!

Open Art is a student based charity/ art venue for Decatur’s up and coming artists looking for a place to show off their stuff. The event is open to all art, from music to painting to video.
This is the first performance of Open Art and they are being hosted by The Church at Decatur Heights. The church has opened their gym to this student group and allowed them to use a large space, perfect for a night of music and the arts.
The date is March 25th for the first performance. There is a $3 cover charge at the door, and all of the proceeds for this show go to Haiti relief

Hamlet opens new performing arts center at Decatur High School–tickets are still available!

The Decatur High School Drama Department will open the city’s new Performing Arts Center with its production of Hamlet from March 18th through March 20th–don’t miss this inaugural event in the DHS Theater.

Hamlet was chosen as the first play by faculty member Lynn Hosking because the play itself makes a huge statement while offering the opportunity for many students to participate as cast members. Senior Vincent Antinozzi will play the role of Hamlet and Emma Maris,a freshman, will playing the role of Ophelia.

“The 10th Annual Swinging Night of Tap”
Saturday, April 17th and Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Decatur City Dance presents “The 10th Annual Swinging Night of Tap.” Featuring 18 works, the show runs about two hours and is guaranteed to entertain audiences of all ages. Come enjoy a wide variety of dance and music styles. Most of the choreography is by Birda Ringstad, director of the Rhythm Keepers (an adult tap company), the Junior Rhythm Keepers (a teen tap company), and the Rug Cutters (a teen swing dance group). Guest musicians Peter Chen (violin) and John Moore (guitar) will perform “Libertango” with the Rhythm Keepers. Mr. Moore will also perform “Classical Gas” with Tommy’s Girls – Sheila Artis, Jenny Greene, Lynn Payne and Birda Ringstad. These dancers call themselves Tommy’s Girls because they all studied with renowned tap dancer Tommy Sutton. The Apprentice and Professional Ensembles of Decatur City Dance will also perform. Internationally-known tap dancer Josh Hilberman from Boston will appear as a special guest performer.

Inspirations – A Study in Glass

“Inspirations: A Study in Glass” on view until April 9th.

The exhibition will feature a wide variety of hand-blown glass art sculptures from the artists of Duckbill Studios. The title, “Inspirations (A Study In Glass),” addresses the diverse nature and styles of glass blowing.
The Duckbill Studios was created by artist Tadashi Torii in 2005. Classes are available for both new and experienced students, including paperweight workshops for novices and group events. Throughout the year, Duckbill opens the studio to the community with workshops and exhibitions. For more information, call 404.460.2791.

Summer Shimmers with Art and Music at 120 Sycamore Place in Decatur!

Join Ms. Sylvia,Ms.Katy,Mr. Damon and more talented teaching artists for 1/2 day and afternoon camps! Handbuild clay,paper machie,paint,pastel and collage your way accompanied by music and walking tours,climb the Magnolia Trees and have Fellini’s on Fridays! Wear old clothes and bring water for walks!

Camps are weekly through the summer beginning May 26-28 and through the 4th week of August. The cost for 5 day camps from 9- noon for ages 3-9 or ages 9-12 are 125-/week;The cost for 3 day camps from 9-noon is 95-/week;extended lunch at Fellini’s from 12-1pm is 15-/day.
The cost for afternoon camps from 1-4 pm is 125-/ 5 day week and 95-/ 3 day week.
Extended lunch is 15-/daily.
If you sign up for both 1/2 day and afternoon camps in the same week, the extended lunch fee is waived.You may not mix and match camps or children.

Several Dancers Core – Free Events

Several Dancers Core presents two free dance events on Thursday, March 18th at the Several Dancers Core Studio, 139 Sycamore Street on the Square in Downtown Decatur.
Lunchtime in the Studio–noon until 1 p.m.–will focus on CORE’s outreach initiative, the Dynamic X-Change Healing Arts program, which brings healing movement classes to populations in isolation through partnerships with other local nonprofits.
Lunch will be provided free to the first 40 audience members by Zucca and Chick-fil-A plus coffee supplied by Starbuck’s.
CORE’s Salon will held in the evening on March 18th and will focus on CORE Performance Company’s new dance piece The Point. Light refreshments will be served.
Both events will be featured again on April 15th.
